No one ever said, “Mmmm….monosodium glutamate!”

Many people use packaged onion soup mix in their recipes. People love to pour it on chicken, kugels, soup, stews, quiches, dips, potatoes etc. I was curious what the big deal was with this mix because it wasn’t anything I was ever exposed to growing up. In many households/communities this is a weekly staple ingredient in their cooking. So I looked up the ingredients online and was shocked at what I saw.To sum it up……pure processed junk! It is filled with Palm Oil (high in saturated fat), MSG (there is a hundred reasons why this is horrible for you),sugar, corn starch, maltodextrin, plus a whole list of words that you cannot pronounce and can barely be classified as “food”. Plus, it is extremely high in sodium…thanks again MSG!
Not to go on and on about why humans should stay away from MSG, which is a cheap flavor enhancer but I want to share a quote that sites doctors and research behind the adverse effects of MSG. “MSG is also a harmful neurotoxin and excitotoxin that leads to and/or worsens many health problems ranging from headaches, migraines, mood change, nausea, pains in joints/bones, sleep disorders, chronic post nasal drip, heart irregularities and excessive perspiration to Asthma, ADD, Depression, Obesity and many more. It is also implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Lou Gehrig`s (ALS), MS, Parkinson`s and Alzheimer`s.”
You can make chicken, potatoes, kugals etc. with better flavor, less money, and much healthier by NOT using highly processed soup mix powder!. Both my husband and I like to cook these dishes and we love to use fresh ingredients but if we are ever in a time crunch we just use onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, papirika and sometimes herbs:fresh or dried. If you are going to buy onion soup mix in a package please do yourself (and your health) a favor and buy a Non MSG soup mix powder (you can get it at a natural food store). Once you switch over you will not miss the sodium filled packaged stuff….

Here is a recipe you can use to make a healthy onion soup mix. Mix all these ingredients in a jar and it should last you for a while:
  • 2/3 c. dried minced onion
  • 4 tsp. dried parsley
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 2 tsp. tumeric
  • 1 tsp. celery seed (if you use celery salt instead of seed, then don’t add any other salt)
  • ½ tsp  sugar (optional-I would suggest using brown sugar)
Shake all the ingredients together and store in a dry, cool place. Use 4 Tablespoons of this onion soup mix in place of a packet of onion soup mix. You can add this to soups, stocks, potatoes, chicken, kugel etc.
